Falling Skies: Season 3 Premiere Posted by Tiggiler |

"... over the last 7 months ..."
That was the phrase heard over and over again during the two hour season premiere of Falling Skies on TNT. So much has changed since the end of season two that they apparently felt they needed to remind the viewers that a chunk of time had passed so that we don't start questioning where everything came from. I'm sorry to disappoint but I was still scratching and shaking my head in disbelief. If you need to constantly remind us that so much time has lapsed then you are obviously straying from the story or introducing things that you clearly haven't built up in the story and probably shouldn't.
Case-in-point... The humans now have advanced technology from the new alien race that landed at the end of season two and are now able to effectively fight back. In the two hour premiere there were two battles that took place, both of which were a success for the humans. This also leads to the next gripe I have with the direction this episode took. They lost the overall feel and theme of the first two seasons. Up to this point the show was about the 2nd Mass attempting to survive and evade the skidders and the bonds that were formed between the human participants. This episode was more of a "hey look at all this cool stuff we can do with CG" and more of an attempted action movie feel.
The previews for the coming season looked promising but I've been burned in the past by those (ie. The Walking Dead Season III). It seems to me that Season three for really good shows has become the testing ground to find out what direction a show should move to. It goes really well for the first two then in the third if you can keep a majority of your fans after you change the cinematic elements of the show you're golden.
*Spoilers*
Just to demonstrate some of my point, these are things that really stuck with me as being out of place from the first two seasons. If you haven't watch the premiere yet, you might want to hold off reading below.
- Tom Mason is now the President of the USA (really it's just Charlestown). - He all of a sudden lets his youngest boy go into battle. - Tom and the good doctor have had an alien baby. It can crawl of the bed and say "mommy" at just a day or two old. - The bug implanted in Hal by Karen makes it so he's paralyzed when he's awake but now he gets up in the middle of the night (almost like sleep walking) and meets her in the woods. - The new friendly aliens are building this massive weapon underground of Charlestown and Tom is just OK with it.
Come on people. Get this stuff out of your system and get back to the story telling that kept me watching during Season 1 and 2. You don't have me as engrained in this show as The Walking Dead does it and if season 3 of Falling Skies remains crap, I won't stay with it.
I'd love to hear what you thought of the episode. |
